The Legislative Process At Work

I sent an email to my city councilperson this morning opposing the proposed introduction of legislation banning the sale of foie gras in New York City restaurants and food markets. Just a few hours later, the Sun reported that councilman Gerson is reconsidering the legislation, and will not be introducing it at this time.

My voice was heard! I've been frustrated with the political process more often than not over the past six years - today turned things around just a teeny tiny bit.

Watch out NY, I'm quickly headed toward being the crazy lady who calls the mayor every day to complain about the potholes and saves her tinfoil to make hats for her 87 cats.

You may notice that the blog got a facelift - hope you like it.

What the hell is wrong with everyone? first you ban smoking in privately owned restaurants where god forbid you let the owners decides if smoking should be allowed in THEIR restaurants and now this?

have you ever read the essay "stuffed animals" by jeffrey steingarten, btw? he examines whether eating foie gras is ethical and overall, his conclusion is that it isn't nearly as horrible as some make it out to be. here, i'm gonna take it out and take a quote.

"The scientific evidence is pretty much unanimous in not condemning foie gras, but the evidence is still limited. So though it seems unnecessary to stop eating foie gras altogether, the data is not unamibiguous enough to encourage gorging. For now, the most sensible policy is to eat just a little of this sublime and ancient delicacy. Which is what most of us are doing already."

Sounds reasonable, enough, no?

i don't know why i'm so fired up about this. I've never even tried foie gras. but this is all very facist. go beth, let your voice be heard!

Good for you, MeBeth! I'm tired of this America becoming smaller and even more smaller-minded with every day.

BTW... your site looks, ah, like a blank slate? Is that how it is supposed to appear? All I see is the text from each entry.

THANK YOU, you wielder of the powerful pen, er keyboard.

FYI, I'm moving (sob) back to CA mid Dec. I will definitely try to catch you before I leave.

I'm inspired now. I will write to Governor Ahnold about his foie gras ban in Sacramento.

Hi Paz - this photo was taken in the Patagonia in Chile last January, it was quite a climb to get up that mountain!
