Things Are Not Going Well

This is my sink…

But that is not my soap! Every day around, oh, 10am or so, a giant mass of bubbles comes wildly frothing out of my sink drain and fills up the entire sink, stopping juuuuust shy of overflowing all over the kitchen floor. Why is this? Fellow apartment dwellers – do you have this?

And I fell. The great blizzard of ’06 + pomegranate margaritas = me sliding down the steps at the Lexington/53rd Street subway station and landing on my left hip. I jumped right up and tried to pretend nothing happened, but by the time I got home I had a huge lump. I would take a photo and share the horror right here on the internet, but it would be nearly impossible to photograph my hip without also photographing other parts of me that I would prefer not to share with the internet at large. (Mom – did I just hear a sigh of relief?) So use your imagination -- It looks like I have a third butt cheek, a purple third butt cheek, growing from the side of my hip.

Sorry about that disgusting mental image I just shared with you. Here is a photo of some empanadas to help you cleanse your mental palate.

Try witch hazel. Supposed to reduce bruises. Never worked for me

Is it just me or do empanadas now look like butt cheeks?

Maybe this is part of the apartment's "free sink cleaning" program?

Maintenance Person 1: "Say, let's fix the plumbing so that every day, around, oh, 10:00 am or so, we backwash everybody's sinks!"

Maintenance Person 2: "Yeah!"

Sorry to hear about your fall :( Hope it gets better quickly! And if not, more popmegranate margaritas should help. :)

Anonymous - ANYTHING is worth a try at this point - this bruise is not pretty.

Jeff - Hmmm, perhaps I'll stay away from empanadas for a while. I agree about the maintenance program, likely it is all a big plot.

Mona - I wish I could say I made those empanadas; we had them in Buenos Aires for lunch one day.

Awwww MeBeth! I'm so sorry you fell, that really sucks. We had a similar yet much more disgusting problem with our sink in our apartment (I won't bore you with the yucky details) but the maintainance guys were here for about 3 hours before it was fixed.

I've never read your blog before today, but I have a pretty good idea what's up with your sink.

One of your neighbors sharing the same water system probably put way too much dishsoap either down the sink or in their dishwasher. They also could have been using dishsoap to unclog the toilet or other drains (yes, it can help). Basically, as the waste water is drained in their apartment, the soap froths up so much it travels up pipes not currently being used (meaning yours)

I could be wrong, but it's happened to me once before.

A-HEM.

This bruise is merely a physical reminder that our human pains just make the real gods angry.

do you have laundry in your building and you're right above the laundry? or maybe someone above/ below you has a dish washer? or you have a dish washer? this happens in my mother's apt when her dish washer is running...

i had the same experience a few years back during a snow storm in the city. i couldn't sit down for 2 weeks and even went to the doctor too get it checked! i still have a bum bump to prove my former pain.
